Wind Bells and Wind Chimes: What Are They?

The dictionary simply defines a wind chime as "a cluster of small often sculptured pieces (as of metal or glass) suspended so as to chime when blown by the wind". However, this basic description does not do justice to their complexity.

Metal and wood are the most common components employed to build the suspended tubes, rods, bells, or other items which constitute wind chimes - a sort of percussion instrument. People usually display them outside their homes or other properties as decoration. Because the chimes being struck by the random effects of the breeze, they create something called chance-based tunes. "Indistinct" or somewhat "distinct" pitches can sound from these tubes or rods. Windchimes that sound fairly distinct pitches can, via the haphazard movement of air, create simple tones or broken chords.

In the 2nd century CE, India and China started making great pagodas and hung tiny wind bells from each corner so the wind would catch each one. Wind bells were thought to deter dangerous creatures from entering, as well as frighten away any ill-intentioned energies. In addition to adorning pagodas, chimes were also dangled below the rooftops of palaces, places of worship, and even homes.

The Chinese began casting wind bells in the twelfth century, ushering in the modernization of wind chimes. Highly trained artisans developed metallic bells, among them the yong-zhon (a clapperless bell), designed for use in religious rituals. The new wind bell is built upon a Chinese design identified as the feng-ling. Temples and shrines throughout China were adorned with feng-lings as protection from evil, and to attract spirits of good will.
